The future you paint is grim, and for a good reason. We have examples in history of similar things happening.

However, there are a few key differences between what happened then and what is happening now.

First and foremost, you have the internet, where any voice is amplified. The Guardian might be silent, but someone will be screaming "we told you so", and everyone will be able to see it.

Second. You have a younger generation that is not afraid of speaking out, and does not trust the older generation to make important decisions.
These two things were absent in the Weimar Republic et al.
You have 48% of the British population that voted against Brexit. They are not planning to stay quiet, and nobody can force them to.

That is the reason I am somewhat optimistic regarding the situation.

Another cause of concern, though - even in the most optimistic and probably unrealistic scenario where both the British public and parliament fully recognize and repent for their mistake... Is there a going back? Will Britain be accepted back to the EU with open arms? Or is the damage already done, with no going back?
